Wednesday, 4 May From Store Room to Board Room: Leadership Lessons I Learnt Along the Way
                                    Liak TL
                                    Alexandra Health System, Singapore

As a young intern rotating through a pharmaceutical factory and a hospital pharmacy department, leadership in action is
observed from the bottom looking up perspective. That perspective is very different from the top looking down perspective.

Reality on the ground is that rank does not make one a leader. Leaders exist at all levels of the organisation. Positional
authority has limited influence on behaviour of people. People do not work for the “boss”. They work for themselves, their
families, their passion, their beliefs. They follow people they respect and trust.

Leadership is situational. Different types of leaders are needed in different circumstances. The most effective leaders who
can drive breakthrough and transformational initiatives are often not the best people to manage a stable, highly standardised
and routine operation. The most effective leaders are also good followers. They have the ability to think three levels up and
three levels down. They have the 30-thousand-feet perspective as well as the ability to dig underground to understand
                                    ground issues deeply.
