Introduction

Established in 1956 and previously operated by the Society for the Relief of Disabled Children, the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital (DKCH) at Sandy Bay provides specialised paediatric services addressing a wide array of complex medical issues, developmental and neurological disorders, orthopaedic conditions, as well as advanced musculoskeletal and respiratory rehabilitation. As a designated centre under the Hospital Authority, DKCH specialises in the care of children with respiratory disorders requiring ventilator support and serves as the referral centre for School Health Screening of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. The hospital offers comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, and rehabilitation services, all supported by dedicated multidisciplinary allied health teams, who collaborate towards the common goal of enabling children to achieve their fullest potential. Additionally, DKCH operates a Child Assessment Centre (CAC), which delivers one-stop developmental assessments and interventions for children with developmental, behavioural, and neurological conditions. The hospital is equipped with various facilities and advanced equipment to support a range of rehabilitation programmes, including pulmonary, oromotor, and neurocognitive rehabilitation.

Originally established as a spine centre in the 1950s, DKCH has gained international recognition for its expertise in treating complex paediatric spinal and orthopaedic conditions for over half a century. It currently functions as a tertiary referral and specialist training centre for both local and international surgeons. Since 2015, orthopaedic services have expanded to include joint replacement surgery, and in 2025, the DKCH Ambulatory Care Centre was established to enhance the breadth of orthopaedic services offered.

In 2025, the hospital also inaugurated a new Rehabilitation Garden, strategically located adjacent to the paediatric ward and designed to ensure barrier-free access. The garden is meticulously themed around elements of nature, integrating features such as forests, skies, and oceans to create a multi-sensory experience for children. It serves as a healing space for long-term hospitalised children, allowing them to immerse themselves in nature, enjoy sunlight, breathe fresh air, and providing a comfortable outdoor area for rehabilitation training.
