Services Categories
1. Inpatient Services¡K
Acute Services
  • 24 hours admission via the Accident & Emergency Department
  • Secondary screening of potential surgical admissions after 17:00 hrs.
  • Dedicated Resident Surgical Officer on call for all such cases.
  • 24 hours emergency endoscopy (diagnostic & therapeutic service) for Gastro-intestinal Bleeding.
Elective Inpatient
  • All cases except immediate category are booked by the individual team and admitted to the appropriate ward.
  • Categories :
    • 'Priority 1' - Urgent and consultation within one week;
    • 'Priority 2' - Semi-urgent and consultation within 6 weeks;
    • Routine;
    • 'Priority 0' - for Primary care.
  • Standard protocol of pre-operative investigations developed with the Department of Anaesthesia.
  • ¡§Same day¡¨ admission for general anaesthetic operative cases to minimize the length of inpatient stay.
  • Monthly prospective audit (morbidity & mortality) is conducted of all inpatient services.
2. Ambulatory Services ¡K

Outpatient Consultation Clinics

  • The Department provides outpatient consultation services 5 days per week in the Specialist Out-patient Block of the Hospital.
  • All new cases require a referral to be seen at any of the clinics.
  • All cases are scheduled to arrive 15 minutes prior to consultation time.
  • Quality assurance of patient waiting time (arrival to consultation) is conducted.
  • Provision is available for urgent referrals to be seen on any normal working days of the Polyclinic.
  • Telephone referrals of urgent consultations from local community physicians are accepted.
  • Follow-up visits are scheduled to be seen by the appropriate consultation teams.
  • All follow-up patient records are screened by each team heads and cases seen by the surgical trainee staff are supervised.
  • Cases who have defaulted follow up visits but have been seen within the preceding 1 year may request further consultation for related problems.
  • Consultation clinics are divided into general surgical (streamlined by team & subspecialty interest basis) subspecialty interest.
  • All elective referrals are seen at the appropriate general clinic.
  • All emergency admission follow up are by the treating team to ensure continuity of care, irrespective of the team¡¦s specialty interest.
3. Specialty Services¡K

Day Surgery (Ward B8) & related Procedures

  • Dedicated weekly list for General (x2) and Local Anaesthetic (x2) procedures.
  • Community Nursing Service provides post operative support.
  • Patients can be admitted overnight as required. On admission are waived their ¡§initial day¡¨ charge.

Nutrition (Parenteral - Adult) Support Service
Multidisciplinary Team consisting of the following:

Microbiology

  • Patients prescribed 3 litre complete nutrition solution daily which can be tailored for individual requirements.
  • Standard protocols for access lines,
  • Uniform monitoring and management of complications.
  

Combined Endoscopy Unit (Ambulatory)

¡V jointly operated with Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, PYNEH

    The Department directs the service of this multidisciplinary unit.

  • Patients are scheduled for ambulatory elective procedures.
  • Elective video-endoscopic diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are performed daily.
  • The Senior staff of the department provides the majority of the trainers and supervisors in this service.
  • All surgical resident staff are trained in an ¡§integrated¡¨ program and supervised to perform the various endoscopic procedures during their rotations.
  • 24 hour emergency endoscopy (diagnostic & therapeutic service) for Gastro-Intestinal Bleeding is provided by the staff of this department.

Non-invasive Vascular Laboratory

The non-invasive vascular laboratory located on the Surgical Day Ward is jointly operated by staff of Department of Surgery and Radiology. It provides comprehensive service in duplex ultrasound diagnosis, preoperative assessment and post-operative surveillance assessment and post-operative surveillance of arterial and complex venous disease. Accurate non-invasive preoperative lesions localization could save an invasive angiographic procedures and also provides valuable insight to subsequent management plan.
