Introduction
The Service is responsible for ensuring that sufficient supplies of safe and high-quality blood and blood components are available for local transfusion therapy patients. All the blood used for these is provided on a non-remunerated basis by healthy, carefully-screened volunteer donors living in Hong Kong.
One of the Service's most-important tasks is to motivate the community to make regular blood donations, which are collected by its four mobile teams, seven donor centres and two blood-collection vehicles. The blood donations are then tested for blood groups and mandatory infection markers before they are processed into various blood products. Finally, these blood and blood products are distributed to public and private hospitals for clinical transfusion, which make them available to patients.
The Service also manages and operates the registries of bone marrow donors established by the Hong Kong Red Cross and Hong Kong Marrow Match Foundation, including tissue typing bone marrow transplant donors and recipients and other associated services.
