Bradbury Hospice extends our care to the families we serve after
he death of patients.
A. What is bereavement?
Bereavement refers to the experience we have when someone close to us dies.
Many people suffer the pains of loss and grief during the time of bereavement.
B. Importance of bereavement support
The opportunity to talk about the thoughts and feelings about the person who has died is important, but
our relatives and friends may not be always available to us. Bereavement service is therefore offered to our grieving families who will need it and benefit from it.
C. Content of bereavement service
1. Counselling
- Conselling in bereavement involves helping people accept and adjust to
their loss and to experience the pain of grief in an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding.
- People are helped to find strength and confidence within themselves and assisted to
identify and utilize resources in their community.

2. Bereavement Group
- In the time of grief, people may prefer to talk to someone who has also suffered the loss of
a loved person. They often feel that only someone who has actually 'been through it and survived¡¦
could possibly understand.
- We assist and support people in the context of group where common thoughts and feelings can
be shared in an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance.
- Types of bereavement group:
a. Drop-in Groups
- an open group designed to meet the different needs and pace of bereaved people
- the group meets every three weeks
- people is free to decide when to join the group and when to terminate their engagement in
accordance with their own needs and pace.
b. Groups for young spouse
- it's particularly painful and stressful for people with young children to lose their spouse.
- the group is organized for people to share their grief, to learn to cope with their stress,
and changes in their relationships with children, and identify their strength in adjusting to
the new life.
c. Groups for children
- Children need to grieve, just as adults do
- Group provides a more secure and supportive atmosphere for children to express their grief
and learn to adapt to the changes of the family.
3. Publication/Education materials
a. Booklet about bereaved children
- The booklet talks about how to explain death to children and how to encourage
children to express their emotions.
- a practical tool to help adults support grieving children.
b. Funeral pamphlet
- The pamphlet is produced to provide financial information and guideline to
help family in funeral arrangement.
c. Sympathy card
- Every bereaved family will receive a sympathy card
- a means to show our concern and encourage them to approach us for necessary support.
